Interests: I think this character has a lot of potential for interacting with people from all sorts of different positions and walks of life and grounding them in something very human. Everybody's gotta eat, right? I mean, except maybe Shale. But that's fine! I don't judge.
In addition to that though, I think I'd be most interested in getting involved somehow with stuff that explores interesting lore and history, both old and new.
CHARACTER
Name: Avery
Canon/OC: OC
Journal:
Race: Human
Nationality: Fereldan
Occupation: Baker
Age: 24
History
Compared to many of the grand heroes of the Inquisition, Avery has lived a fairly simple life. She never knew her father, who was a "gallant traveling knight" according to her mother, though Denerim gossipers have tended to claim otherwise. A poor, unmarried woman giving birth to the child of a foreigner who'd already sailed off to who-knows-where, never to return? Of course rumors are going to fly and people are going to judge. You just have to ignore it and move on with your life. At least that's Avery's philosophy now.
The whispers and looks were tough at times, and as a child Avery was well known in the neighborhood for having few friends and getting into many fights, but things did get a bit better when her mother settled down and married a kind, older man who ran a bakery in the city. From him, they learned to make themselves useful around the place, and Avery learned to control her temper. Or at the very least to find better outlets for it. Things were nice, for a while, but sadly he was killed during the Blight, and Avery and her mother were alone once again. Though this time with a business to run.
As she grew older, Avery found that she might have something of her father in her after all, as wanderlust began to set in and compel her to a life outside of this one shop in this one city forever. Although it would be years before she acted on that desire, as she also didn't want to leave her mother all alone, with her encouragement Avery eventually decided to give it a shot. She collected her few belongings and joined a caravan to Redcliffe, where she found work for a time, intending to move on again once she'd made a bit of coin for the road. Only the world went mad then, and Avery found herself among refugees in the Hinterlands with war raging all around her.
She joined a small group attempting to flee, possibly to make their way to Denerim, but they were quickly caught up in a skirmish between Templars and rebel mages, and Avery was quite badly wounded helping the others to escape. Though she made it back to the refugee camp at the crossroads, with the lack of supplies there she still might have succumbed to the wound if the Inquisition hadn't arrived and begun assisting them. Grateful for what they'd done and seeing them as one of the few groups out there actually doing some good in this world instead of just looking out for themselves, Avery decided she wanted to help if she could. So once she was finally well enough to travel, she made the trek to Skyhold and has been quietly working in the kitchens ever since.
Personality
Contrary to popular belief, Avery actually does know how to smile. But I'll understand if you don't believe me.
She's a bit of a loner, much more concerned with her work than with making friends or worrying what others think of her, and when she bothers to speak to people at all, she tends to do so in a very straightforward, borderline rude manner that doesn't exactly endear her to most of them. Even as a child she was known for her sharp tongue and short fuse, but she's managed at least to gain control of the second one by now, and deep down even her sarcasm isn't done out of any real malice. She's just learned from a young age to very much have her guard up at all times, and combined with a natural difficulty really connecting and communicating with people, she's decided it's best to just stick to what she knows she's good at. Which is being kind of an ass while simultaneously making sure that no one goes hungry or thirsty or cold on her watch.
Honestly, once you get to know her, it's clear that Avery is pretty much a pushover for anyone who looks like they're really in need and will drop whatever she's doing to help, despite the frustrated sigh that will probably accompany her doing so. She's kind, caring, and sympathetic, and though she suffers no fools, she has the patience of a saint when really put to the test. At her core, Avery is just a hard-working, salt-of-the-earth type woman who struggles with social interactions and "feelings" and stuff but wants to do right. Especially by the Inquisition, as she feels she owes them, even as she rarely feels like she's one of them.
A common enough feeling for her, given how difficult it is for Avery to get close to people and how few of them worth having close she's had in her life for any significant period of time.
Opinions & Affiliations
Avery's mother is a fairly devout Andrastian, and though she herself is less so, it is an undeniable part of her upbringing. She's admittedly a little ignorant when it comes to most other religions and races, but in her opinion that sort of thing isn't worth judging someone over. An asshole is an asshole no matter the shape of his ears. As for the war, she tends to keep it to herself but has a good amount of anger toward both sides to be honest! Because while they're duking it out, it's people like her that get stuck in the middle and turned into collateral damage. Figure it out or kill each other already, before the world burns with you, okay?
Also, Avery hates bullies. She's never had the greatest respect for authority in general and has always been one to look out for the little guys when they're in trouble, so at some point she maaaaaay have done a couple of small favors for the Friends of Red Jenny.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Avery is an excellent cook, with a focus on baking! This is her best skill and how she responds to more situations than she probably should. Sad person? Feed 'em. Sick person? Soup time! Darkspawn attacking? ...okay, that one cooking probably isn't gonna fix. But a butcher's knife or a good, solid frying pan might! Thankfully, she has a bit of skill in combat as well. Nothing formal, but she's always been stronger than she looks and has handled her fair share of run-ins with bullies and thieves in some of the not so great parts of Denerim.
She's also quite observant and quick-witted, and though she's usually kind of garbage at speaking, Avery makes for a very patient and sympathetic listener. She doesn't really think much of that sort of thing though. In her mind, she has few good qualities other than her skill at cooking, and her worth is only as good as her ability to do her job. It's the only reason anyone would want her around, right? So she'd better be as useful as possible.
Inventory
Avery owns very little, other than some fairly plain Fereldan clothes, a handful of kitchen tools, and a few letters from her mother.
Motivation
After quite possibly having her life saved by the Inquisition and the late Herald, Avery wants to do her part to repay them, as well as just to help the people that are protecting everyone. She knows she can't do much herself, but every little bit helps, right?
